What’s Going Around: High Blood Pressure

December 5, 2011

December 5, 2011

In this week’s What’s Going Around we’re talking with Dr. Richard Muller of Buckingham Family Medicine about high blood pressure.

High blood pressure increases with age and is more prevalent in the African American community. However, Dr. Muller stresses that it’s not just a problem in the elderly; it can start in the teenage years especially in overweight teens.

High blood pressure can have no symptoms and typically lasts a lifetime.

When it comes to treatment, Dr. Muller says there are simple and effective remedies, but the first step is finding it. He recommends getting a blood pressure monitoring device for loved ones this holiday, especially parents and grandparents.

Before buying a monitor, Dr. Muller says you should look for three things. It should have an arm cuff (maybe a bigger cuff for larger people), it should be automatic and you may want to think about getting one that plugs into a power outlet. Doing so will save you from having to buy and change batteries frequently.

When it comes to preventing high blood pressure, Dr. Muller says weight reduction and salt restriction work best.
