Vital statistics: Keep diabetes in check

January 15, 2012

With more and more Hoosiers getting diabetes, it’s important to know that steps can be taken to prevent future complications of the chronic disease.

“Knowing your family’s health history is a start, but visiting your health-care provider on a regular basis is crucial,” said Dr. Joan Duwve, chief medical officer at the Indiana State Department of Health. With proper care, the disease can be managed, she said.

The department’s Diabetes Prevention and Control Program website, diabetes .IN.gov, offers resources and advice on dealing with the disease.

Recommended steps include annual eye exams; dental visits twice a year; having doctors check sores or calluses; and protecting kidneys by getting microalbumin levels checked every year.

Those considered pre-diabetic also can take action to keep from developing type 2 diabetes. Even losing a modest amount of weight can reduce risk significantly. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis’ Diabetes Prevention Program is one resource.

Here are some diabetes statistics:

9.8 percent of Hoosiers have been diagnosed with diabetes, and an estimated 4 percent are undiagnosed.

17.2 percent of Hoosiers ages 55-64 and 21 percent of adults 65 and older have been diagnosed.

An additional 35 percent of Hoosier adults are thought to be pre-diabetic, linked to a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.

At least one in 10 adults worldwide could have diabetes by 2030, according to the International Diabetes Federation.
