St John’s Wort Dosage

St John’s wort dosage is usually available in 300 mg capsules. Approximately 900-1200 mg per day is needed to reduce the symptoms of mild to moderate depression. Talk your plans with your doctor.

Here is a St. John’s Wort dosage example:

  • In the first week take 300 mg every night.
  • In the second week, take 300 mg twice a day. (St John’s wort works best if taken twice a day.)
  • In the third and fourth week, take 300 mg morning and 600 mg evening.
  • In the fifth week consider increasing the dose to 600 mg twice a day.
  • Like all antidepressants, it can take four to six weeks before you feel any benefits.

The normal dosage, according to the original study by the British Medical Journal, is three capsules of St. John’s Wort extract per day, 300 mg each, standardized to contain 0.3% hypericin (note: this is a total of 900 mg per day at 0.3% — too little might not be effective, but some people prefer to start out with a lower dosage anyway or have a smaller body size).

The following dosages have been studied in scientific research:

Oral administration:

For mild to moderate depression:

  • When using St. John’s wort extract standardized to 0.3% hypericin content: 300 mg three times daily.
  • When using a St. John’s wort extract standardized to 5% hyperforin: 300 mg three times daily.

For premenstrual syndrome (PMS):

St. John’swort extract standardized to 0.3% hypericin dosed at 300 mg once daily.

When should you take St. John’s Wort?

That’s up to you. Some people experience fatigue as a side-effect, so if you take St. John’s Wort at night you can sleep through it. You can take all three capsules at once, or spread the dosage out over breakfast, lunch and supper.

How long does St. John’s Wort  take to work?

It’s different for everybody. You need to give it six weeks for it to work, although many people start to feel better in as soon as a week.St. John’sWort works for most people, but not everyone. If St. John’s Wort really doesn’t work for you, don’t worry there are a number of other natural options like 5-HTP and Rhodiola Rosea that can be just as effective. If you trySt. John’sWort, remember that it takes up to six weeks for it to work. If you stop taking it after a week or two, you’ll never know if it could have worked for you.

Don’ t stop taking St. John’ s wort all at once, because that may cause unpleasant side effects. Gradually lower the dose before stopping.

The dosage may vary from different brands, check the dosage and direction on the label of your supplements carefully or discuss with your healthcare providers before you take any herbal supplements.
