Does St. John’s Wort improve our anxiety?


No scientific data support that St. John’s Wort possesses the property of treating anxiety.

St. John’s wort has been used mainly in the treatment of mild to moderate depression, stomach upset, insomnia, fluid retention, and hemorrhoids. St. John’s wort has also been used topically in the treatment of nerve and muscle pain, skin inflammation, skin wounds, and burns.

The researchers said: ‘Anxiety is characterized by a feeling of persistent worry that hinders an individual’s ability to relax.’

Over the past several decades, complementary and alternative medications have increasingly become part of everyday treatment. With the rising cost of prescription medications and their production of unwanted side-effects, patients are exploring herbal and other natural remedies for the management and treatment of psychological conditions.

But the usefulness of St. John’s Wort as a primary treatment for anxiety has not been established. A 2005 study of the effectiveness of St. John’s Wort in treating social anxiety disorder (SAD) found that patients who took the medicine didn’t improve any more than patients who took a placebo.

Certain herbs do exhibit potent anti-anxiety effects, and a handful of herbal anxiety supplements have been proven to effectively relieve anxiety when manufactured properly and administered in the proper dosages.

Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is one herb shown to relieve anxiety in clinical trials. Standardized Valerian extracts with a minimum of 0.8% valerenic acid. Valerian extract works rapidly, often in less than an hour.

Kava has long been used in traditional medicine for the calming properties, and the herb is now sold in stores as capsules or liquid extracts. The evidence is “strong” that kava may actually help people with anxiety, according to the review.

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata) is effective for anxiety and related conditions. It’s important to use a standardized Passion Flower extract with at least 3-4% vitexin.
