What is Ginkgo biloba?

What is Ginkgo biloba? Today Ginkgo Biloba means ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) that comes from the green leaves of Ginkgo biloba tree that is one of the oldest living tree species. Alternative names: Maidenhair tree,Kew tree, Japanese silver apricot.

What is a ginkgo biloba tree? Ginkgo biloba tree has been around for 150 to 200 million years. A single tree can live as long as 1,000 years and grow to a height of 120 feet. It has short branches with fan-shaped leaves and inedible fruits that produce a strong odor. The fruit contains an inner seed, and there has been a report of a human poisoning from ingesting the seed. Ginkgo biloba is tough, hardy tree and sometimes planted along urban streets in the United States. Ginkgo Biloba was first introduced to Europe in the 1700’s, and is now used all over the world. Ginkgo Biloba is one of the most researched herbs.

What is ginkgo biloba extract? Although Chinese herbal medicine has used both the ginkgo biloba leaf and seed for thousands of years, modern research has focused on the standardized Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE), which is made from the dried green leaves. This standardized extract is highly concentrated and seems to be more effective in treating health problems (particularly circulatory ailments) than the non-standardized leaf alone. The extract of ginkgo biloba leaves is used medicinally in North  America, where it’s one of the most popular medicinal herbs, and many other countries around the world.

What is Ginkgo biloba used for? The Chinese have used Ginkgo Biloba for thousands of years to relief asthma, lung congestion, and have also used Ginkgo Biloba to increase sexual energy, regulate blood flow, and promote general longevity. Today, it is one of the top-selling herbs in theUnited States.

Ginkgo biloba is used for the treatment of numerous conditions, many of which are under scientific investigation. Available evidence demonstrates ginkgo biloba’s efficacy in the management of intermittent claudication, Alzheimer’s/multi-infarct dementia, and
“cerebral insufficiency” (a syndrome thought to be secondary to atherosclerotic disease, characterized by impaired concentration, confusion, decreased physical performance, fatigue, headache, dizziness, depression, and anxiety).

Although not definitive, there is promising early evidence favoring the use of ginkgo biloba for memory enhancement in healthy subjects, altitude (mountain) sickness, symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), age-related eye disorders, and the reduction of chemotherapy-induced end-organ vascular damage.
