Focussing on heart health

Australind Chemmart Pharmacy is urging everyone to have their blood pressure checked as part of a nationwide campaign to raise awareness on heart health.

Pharmacist Andrew Harris said regular blood pressure testing could indicate if people are at risk of heart, stroke and blood vessel diseases as well as helping to manage other health issues.

‘‘Many people think heart disease only affects older men, but this is wrong,’’ he said.

‘‘Statistics from the National Heart Foundation show that women are four times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer.’’

The Australind pharmacy is one of more than 200 across the country participating in the Chemmart Blood Pressure Challenge in a bid to complete 10,000 blood pressure tests in one week in pharmacies across Australia.

‘‘Current statistics also show that as many as one in three adults suffer from high blood pressure which, if left untreated, can increase your risk of a stroke or heart attack,’’MrHarris said.

‘‘A blood pressure test only takes a few minutes and those tested will get an information card which includes advice and tips onhowtomanage their blood pressure.

‘‘What many people don’t realise is that blood pressure testing can be done quickly and easily at our pharmacy.’’

The campaign began yesterday and will run until Sunday.
